Rock Quiz
With a background as a geologist and a 6th grade science teacher, I made a quiz reflecting Earth Science questions that my 6th graders would normally be tested on. However, this quiz also reminded me of the game show "Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader?" in the sense that adults can take the quiz to test their knowledge of 6th grade material. Unfortunately, some of the material we learned in middle school is forgotten. I appreciate that this quiz can give adults the opportunity to refresh their knowledge on one of Earth's most important processes. Most of the quiz questions refer to the three different types of rocks and natural processes like weathering and erosion.
I really wanted to create a quiz that would be more engaging for 6th grade students-so it could actually be used in the classroom one day. Students do not typically enjoy taking quizzes; additionally, most of them do not give immediate feedback. An online HTML quiz, such as this one, is a great way to keep students more engaged while being assessed, while earning praise for answering questions correctly in real time. I chose a background color that would be easy on the eyes; additionally, the background color is a natural color one would find on the Earth, which adds to the theme. I added an image of the Earth to make it more fun. Through this project, I learned a tremendous amount in regards to HTML and Javascript. I did not have much experience with coding before, so this really opened my eyes to how exciting it can be to customize a template and make it your own. I learned how to change the background color, add an image, and customize the text and buttons.
